The Glif

Unpublished

I just backed a brilliant idea on Kickstarter.com. Dan Provost and Thomas Gerhardt designed a wonderfully simple tripod mount and stand for the Iphone 4.

Big problems, smart and affordable solutions.

Unpublished

Just read a great article in National Geographic featuring several design solutions that address wide spread problems with affordable and innovative solutions. The Sugarcane charcoal developed by MIT-D lab not only solves a problem but creates a business opportunity.

Rainbowgun

Unpublished

Came across this spray gun created, by the Wouters brothers, to hold up to 7 spray cans at once. Love it. You can check out the demonstration video and more of work at:

WTF?

Unpublished

This was the perfect pick me up for the dreary NYC weather on this Monday morning. Idea lab Minga designed a series of laugh out loud poster based on "WTF".

Check out the entire set and more of there work here:

Meryl Pataky

Unpublished

I love when a designer/artist/sculptor - any creative type - explores unexpected mediums. So when I found an article on MyLoveForYou about Meryl Pataky I was overwhelmed with excitement to share. Meryl is preparing for a solo show at a.Muse Gallery which will be all neon creations based on literature. She builds all the glass tubing and fills it with the noble gases in her studio. The glass looks incredibly delicate and Pataky says it can be quite dramatic and difficult to work with at times.

New Materials Monday: Spray-On Fabric

Unpublished

While it is Tuesday this post was meant to go up yesterday. And from here on I'm going to try to post a new (new to me) material on Mondays - hopefully I can stick to it!

Just reading Time magazine's 50 Best Inventions of the year and came across this incredible Spray on Fabric developed by Fabrican.

Dan Funderburgh's Utilitarian Objects

Unpublished

Dan Funderburgh, a personal favorite of mine, showed some new work at Eyelevel BQE a few weeks ago. The pieces were utilitarian objects - paste bottle, chain ring and the like, that were created in illustration board then laser engraved. Funderburgh has an amazing ability to create super intricate patterns and layer them together. Looking closely at his work you'll always find hidden imagery that tells a story about the project.

Ecovative's Greensulate insulation.

Unpublished

Upstate NY startup Ecovative makes a really remarkable material from fungus. Years of trial and error brought them to a formula in which mushrooms are fed with agricultural waste to create a grown, not manufactured, product.

A Love Letter For You

Unpublished

This morning I'm enjoying Stephen Powers larger than life Love Letters to Philly. The Philadephia Mural Arts program worked with Powers, a Philly native, along with other artists to paint derelict buildings on a stretch of Market Street. The project pays homage to legendary graffiti artist Cornbread who would leave love murals all over the city to his girlfriend circa 1960. Apparently this guy is quite a legend having once tagged the Jackson 5's private jet and a live elephant at the Philly zoo.

MADE BY BACTERIA (instead of made in China?)

Unpublished

Hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving. Had hoped to post over the break but traveling, visiting with family and eating took up all of my time, and it was lovely! And now back to the grind...

Suzanne Lee, a researcher at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design has developed a material made by the bacteria in green tea used to ferment the super healthy drink kombucha. As the bacteria digest the sugar they create a mat of cellulose, which Lee harvested and dried.

Calma aka Stephan Doitschinoff

Unpublished

Last week I posted Stephen Powers work and it reminded me of a short film Eric and saw at an exhibit last year in Paris. Street artist Calma aka Stephan Doitschinoff painted several buildings in a rural village in his native Brazil. Doitschinoff work is full of beautiful patterns, hidden symbols and wonderful color combination. In his words " he plays on the relationship between the sacred and profane".

Thomas Doyle

Unpublished

Just came across these miniature scenes created by Thomas Doyle and couldn't resist posting them.

New Material Mondays: Salmon Leather

Unpublished

Last year Eric and I attended the Architectural Digest Home Design Show and met the folks from ES Salmon Leather. This fabric is an eco-friendly leather that is made by re-purposing a by-product of the salmon industry; salmon skin. It looks delicate but actually it's quite strong, flexible and soft. It has the appearance of snake skin and takes well to color - they had several vibrant swatches.

Bowerbirds

Unpublished

I just got sucked down the information rabbit hole with these most amazing birds. The Macgregor's bowerbird is being studied for it's uncanny similarities to humans. To interest females, the male builds elaborate huts with woven sticks, branches and vine - and this is just the beginning. They color coordinate nuts, berries and leaves and very intentionally and artfully place them around and in their hut . Donald, the bird in the study, killed beetles to arrange in a pile for decoration - Humans are the only other species known to use animals in this way.

Patrick Dougherty at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

Unpublished

Patrick Dougherty at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden right now. Couldn't resist comparing his work to Bowerbirds!

New Material Mondays (on Tuesday) : X-Flex Blast Protection System

Unpublished

This super wallpaper is quite possibly stronger than the wall it's on! "Invented by Berry Plastics in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this lifesaving adhesive is designed for use anyplace that’s prone to blasts and other lethal forces, like in war or natural-disaster zones, chemical plants or airports. To keep a shelter’s walls from collapsing in an explosion and to contain all the flying debris, you simply peel off the wallpaper’s sticky backing, apply the rollable sheets to the inside of brick or cinder-block walls, and reinforce it with fasteners at the edges.

New Material Mondays: HEATTECH from Uniqlo

Unpublished

In the winter here it's always nice to come up with new innovative ways to stay warm - especially if you can limit your bulk. So Eric and I were very curious about Uniqlo's Heattech clothing line. With Christmas, a time of giving, it was a great opportunity to get Eric a tee from the Uniqlo line and test it out for New Material Mondays.

What's so wrong with being a dwarf planet?

Unpublished

Ok, after this post I'll ease up on the outer space subject matter - promise! But this Wired article interviewing astronomer Mike Brown aka the man who killed Pluto was too entertaining not to share.

"'How many planets are there?'

'Just eight.'

'Because you killed Pluto.'

'Yes'"

Music Box Fun

Unpublished

Web master Tom with here. Just dropping by with a little personal project I thought followers of this blog might like. I make music on a Game Boy, which is a time consuming process that basically looks a lot like computer programming. My wife Vicky, who was a fellow Pratt kid with C&E, thought to get me a music box kit, which uses punch cards for programming—kind of like an old computer. Needless to say I love it, and of course the first thing I thought to program was the sound track from a video game. Check out a film of me cranking out the song after the jump.

Stale blog

Unpublished

The last 2 weeks Eric and I have been pretty bad about posting. We are currently looking for a new live/work space in Brooklyn (email if you know of any please!). While we love our apartment and the Gowanus location we are excited for a change and a little more space. Hopefully we'll find time to post but it might be a little less frequent till after move.

Handmade abodes

Unpublished

While we are looking for a new abode I have been delving into homes/interiors a little more than usual. Came across Old Chum's flicker page, he has scanned in this entire book titled "Handmade Houses A Guide to Woodbutcher's Art" from 1973. Eric's grandfather was a woodworker and referred to himself as a wood-butcher! Makes me pine (pun intended) for a lot of land in the middle of the woods (Maine preferably) to build a wild house.

Urban Space is hosting a really interesting contest right now: Take a shipping container and re-purpose it as a retail store for art, agriculture or commerce. The winner builds their vision in the Fulton Mall, Downtown Brooklyn where they are opening the new Dekalb Market. Can't wait to see what people come up with!

Red and White Stripes

Unpublished

I'm going to check out the Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts at the Armory this morning. The American Folk Art museum filled this enormous space with 650 quilts all in red and white. Of course I've waited till the absolute last minute to go - today is the last day of the show. I'll have my camera and post pictures tomorrow morning.

Candy Chang's Before I Die

Unpublished

I came across this beautiful project "Before I Die" created by Candy Chang on WoosterCollective . Chang painted and stenciled the side of a derelict building in her New Orleans neighborhood with chalk board paint and stenciled "Before I Die I Want To _______" creating multiple lines for the community to fill in their thoughts. When all the lines were filled they would document the wall, wash it down allowing more people to participate.

I Hit A Brick Wall

Unpublished

Well I made it up town on Thursday morning to catch the last day of the Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts show. And I have to say I was pleasantly blown away. Quilts are a beautiful labor of love and I appreciate the handwork and hours that go into a single one but I didn't know how that would translate for an entire show of 650 - all colored red and white.

First Ever Photos From Mercury Orbit

Unpublished

Incredible photo gallery of the first images from Mercury Orbit. Eric and I are Popular Science devotees and while I was perusing the site to see additional images from an article in the magazine we get (can't get enough Popsci) I came across coverage of the NASA & Etsy Spacecraft contest. Wonderful trifecta!

in

Oh Wired this month you have really outdone yourself. Interview with Limor Fried, handmade jungle submarines and 21 Awesome DIY Projects. Covering a wide range of projects from creating an Arduino trip wire to a remote controlled lawn mower. It's amazing how once complicated and expensive gadgets are becoming a DIY weekend project!

3Form Varia Ecoresin

Unpublished

Alright - I'm doing it. New Material Mondays is back. Eric and I are all moved into our new live/work space and falling back into our schedules. We are in the process of putting together a few new pieces for Design Week. One of the projects we really hope to finish will need a transparent plastic sheet. In researching eco plastics we came across 3Form Varia Ecoresin.

Skillshare and the Dumpster Project

Unpublished

These are two unrelated projects both posted this morning by SwissMiss.

Skillshare - affordable classes in your neighborhood - love it.

The Dumpster Project - artistic hoarding - love it.

New Material Mondays (On Tuesday): Biomimicry And The Sandcastle Worm

Unpublished

Sandcastle worms that build structures underwater out of sand have inspired development of a new adhesive. The sandcastle worm is capable of creating structures underwater by using a material kept inside it's body at a very low PH and when the material enters the PH of the saltwater it slowly hardens. Researchers in Utah have been able to create a "synthetic version, a polyacrylate glue that is water soluble but doesn't dissolve in liquid. It's as strong as Super Glue, and is twice as strong as the worm's original glue".

Anish Kapoor Leviathan

Unpublished

I have been through every photo gallery I can find online trying to see every possible image of sculpture Anish Kapoors "Leviathan". The giant-balloon's scale and contrast to the Grand Palais are incredibly enjoyable. I so wish I could see it in person. If you're in Paris see it for me.

BKLYN Designs 2010!

Colleen and I just got the news that we have been accepted into the BKLYN Designs 2010 show! We're designers by training but not occupation and have been quietly working on our own stuff for years. The BKLYN Designs show has really become a crazy big deal and we've been impressed by the work shown there. After watching from the sidelines for a few years, we decided it was time to give it a go. The application process was pretty official, and we knew we were up against both smart designers and established companies, so we did our very best, and hoped for the best. They liked it! We're pumped, and now Colleen & Eric is for real.

Let's Start A Company?

So our biggest dreams and fears have been granted to us all at once. Thrilling as it was to be accepted into BKLYN Designs, now we have less than 4 months to make it all happen. We feel good about our ideas, but they have to become "products." We think we're good designers, but now we need to be a company. It means exploring manufacturing options, learning about how small businesses work, creating an identity, not to mention building more prototypes and putting our whole booth together! One of the first and most important items on the list is creating this website. Lucky for us, our good friend Chromix knows more than a few things about making websites, and he started by getting the perfect domain name: colleenanderic.com. We'll be adding things along the way, but for now, a blog.

Valentines Day Carving Mallet!

Best Valentines Day present ever! Eric made me a carving mallet, which is pretty great considering we are working on a few carving projects right now. Freakin' sweet. Happy Valentines Day!

First Day BKLYN Designs!

Ok so it's been awhile since we've posted. I could never have imagined how busy we would be from the time we applied to today - the first day of BKLYN Designs.

Day One of the show

So we just finished day one of the BKLYN Designs show. It was a long but pretty wonderful day. Eric and I have been getting some great feedback about our work.

DesignSponge shout out

Colleen and Eric is featured on Design*Sponge!

Thanks SwissMiss

A very talented fellow furniture designer and all around cool guy Daniel Moyer gave us the heads up that we had been posted on SwissMiss. This is really neat - I read her blog pretty religiously and Eric and I have attended her creative time morning events. These events have fantastic speakers, attendance is free and are very inspiring. Thanks SwissMiss!

Ah friday...

Eric's off from work today and we are going to take a little trip out of the city to go mountain biking. I wanted to post some awesome reviews by a few bloggers we got to meet at BKLYN designs.

National Design Week!

Well, we're a few days into it, but it's not too late to appreciate National Design Week. Through Sunday, the Cooper-Hewitt Museum is offering free admission as part of it's Design Week initiative. Do it! Colleen and I love going there, not only because it's a damn beautiful building and they have great shows, but also because it's a completely digestible size. No museum fatigue! Instead, we always leave awake and inspired. A while back we checked out the current show, their triennial called Why Design Now?

Mountain biking in the city?

Last weekend I took a mountain bike ride in Queens, New York. Now, some folks will tell you that "Geographically, Queens is technically part of Long Island, and everyone knows that Long Island has no mountains, so, what are you talking about!?" Well, it's true. Queens doesn't have mountains, or even real hills, but a group of dedicated volunteers have been transforming what little terrain the city has into some very cool trails. As recently as five years ago, bikes were not welcome to touch tires to dirt anywhere in the five boroughs.

Ahalife featuring Flock of Birds!

Check out our Flock of Birds product along with a Q&A with Eric and I at www.ahalife.com. This great site posts a new product, artist or movement everyday to be inspired by.

Thanks to everyone at Ahalife!

Work weekend

Eric and I will be in the shop working all weekend finishing up a few orders and working on a new project (more to come on that soon). This pic is Eric deep in thought at the table saw - which is a good thing.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Tool Appreciation: The Starrett Combination Square

I build a lot of things. Over the years, the Starrett combination square has become the essential tool. Nothing else comes close when it comes to measurement, laying out joinery, and checking machines. It really only does one thing - Precise measurement at 90 or 45 degree angles - but it does that so well, it becomes super versatile. I've used it on every single project in the past five years, and my work is better for it. Mine is relatively new, a gift from Colleen's parents, but there are tons of decades-old Starretts still in use.

The Playlist

Thanks to Amy Feezor for featuring us in The Playlist on the Herman Miller Lifework blog!

New Material Mondays: Clean Cement

It's not one of the issues that gets a lot of press, but concrete (specifically cement) manufacturing is pretty bad on the sustainability scale. The traditional way of making cement involves heating limestone to outrageously high temperatures in an effort to extract carbon dioxide. Not only does all this heating take energy, but of course we use tons and tons of concrete every day.

Holiday Break!

Relaxing with some good food and company this Christmas Eve. Hope everyone is enjoying a little time off with friends and family.

Happy holidays!

Colleen & Eric

Woohoo - Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! And what a year it's been. Eric and I started this business less than a year ago when we launched at Brooklyn Designs. Thinking back we were both so nervous about sharing our work with people. The feed back from you all has been amazingly positive - thank you! We've met some great people and been given some wonderful opportunities.

DIY music box overhaul with Chromix

Chromix aka Tom MacLean, Eric and I love you for so many reasons. You built our website and fix it whenever we (me mostly) do something that seems irreversible. You love mass transit with a passion. You make cool 8 bit music with a game boy. And now this wonderful Mega Man 2 Bubble Man Stage recreated on a music box - awesome and really pretty.

Made with music box kit.

Faire d'une pierre deux coup

Eric and I have been prepping two shelves that are going to Paris this week. The client chose white and gray cubes - which look pretty sharp. In the process of creating the shipping container we got talking about how great it would be to make the crate purposeful. We had taken a trip to Paris in October of last year and had been in awe of all the balconies and outdoor space adorned with foliage. So we created a shipping crate that could be used as a planter.

Over the moon - pun intended

Just received the news that our Northstar table won the Grand prize in the Etsy & NASA space craft contest! We are thrilled and very excited by the prize - a trip to the Kennedy Space Center for a shuttle launch as NASA VIP guests! Thanks so much to NASA and Etsy for hosting such a great contest. I still can't believe astronaut Astronaut Steve Robinson was hanging out with our table - so cool!

We'll have all these product pictures and descriptions up mid week.

Editing pictures taken in our home spun photo studio.

Dang - Sandy you left a path of destruction. Just read today that Leon Rieds studio was under 4ft of Newtown Creek* water. Eric and I were at Pratt at the same time as Leon, and while I don't think he knows us, we know him and his work (so gooood!). Most of his work from the last year was destroyed along with supplies and equipment. Help him rebuild and keep creating here.

Excited to have a project in Amy Azzarito's new book, Past & Present. Amy based the book around 24 of her favorite moments in decorative arts, wrote essays on each, and invited creative folks to design DIY projects inspired by the movements. We were so excited when Amy invited us to create a project based on the Wiener Werkstätte movement. (And check out us/our pad in the trailer!)
