Light Knot

Light Knot - For your consideration!

Wanting to make a light, we were inspired by the amazing characteristics of LEDs - their small stature, incredible flexibility, and enormous energy efficiency. Juxtaposing this very new technology with a traditional material like wood seemed like an awesome mash-up! Since the LED strips can conform to any shape, we decided to explore the very limits of what's possible with bent wood. What you see in these pictures is a single piece of solid ash, 1 1/4" by 1 1/4" square, bent into an exploded view of a knot. Currently, it's held in place by jigs that will be removed once the shape becomes permanent. If you look closely, you can see a slot (temporarily filled by a greenish rubber) that will house the LED strip. As illustrated in our drawing, this is intended to be a pendant lamp.

We've used LEDs before and wanted to further explore their potential. Check out our first project with them.
